Introduction
Wizard of the Crow (WoC), set in an imaginary country Aburiria, is a light-hearted dramatization of the malady of post-independence Africa’s history, which has been characterized by the concentration of powers in the hands of dictators, who are elevated to god-like heights. We are allowed to pry into this reality by the chorus led by cabinet ministers to the effect that “His Mighty Ruler is the Country and the Mighty Country is the Ruler’’ (Ngugi, 2007 : 161). It emerges that the actual motivation for leadership in Africa is greed and this may explain why the Ruler of Aburiria was always baffled by anyone not motivated by greed. He would never understand the type who talked of collective salvation instead of personal survival (WoC : 235).
